The best electric toothbrush: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, Oral-B Pro 7000 or FOREO ISSA 2?

The contest for the best electric toothbrush is now open

With so many different electric toothbrushes flooding the market, and so much marketing noise and biased reviewing surrounding them, it can be tricky to find just the right toothbrush. However, some desired dental care benefits are on everyone’s list: your perfect brush should be gentle on teeth and gums, easy to maneuver, and should, ultimately, lead to healthier and better looking teeth and gums. In order to shine some light on the issue, we’ve picked 3 electric toothbrushes, both sonic and oscillating, that seem to be the most frequently discussed these days, and decided to test them side by side.

Phillips Sonicare DiamondClean – Everybody’s darling

Philips Sonicare is famous for its sonic toothbrushes and DiamondClean is definitely one of the most loved and most advanced electric toothbrushes around. Unlike manual toothbrushes, it uses powerful sonic technology to clean teeth with up to 31,000 brush strokes per minute. Sweeping motions gently drive the paste and water deep into the tight spaces between your teeth and along your gum line, resulting in a cleaner, healthier mouth. The toothbrush promises to whiten teeth in just 1 week, make gums healthier in only 2 weeks and remove plaque 7x better than a manual toothbrush.

Another unique feature is the Philips’s unique charging glass and the USB charging travel case. The glass charges the toothbrush while it’s resting in the glass, and can be used for mouth rinsing after its removal from the base. The toothbrush can be charged directly in the USB charging travel case as well, which lets you take your Philips Sonicare DiamondClean just about anywhere – just connect the case to your laptop via USB or plug it into a wall outlet.

Pros:

  • Highly advanced features
  • Great charging options
  • Excellent overall impression

Cons:

  • Hefty price tag
  • Bit too heavy to hold and handle easily

Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries – The Bluetooth fairy’s bells and whistles

Toothbrushes are getting smarter. The Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries is the world’s first toothbrush with Bluetooth connectivity. Do you really need this? That’s up to you; the feature allows the brush to connect with your smartphone to give you real-time feedback on your brushing habits. In any case, this professionally-looking toothbrush both oscillates, rotates, and pulsates to break up and remove up to 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush – not unlike the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush.

But down to the details: Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries features a rotating head, and carefully angled nylon bristles. Because of this, it might not feel as pleasant as the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean (vibrating), but it cleans just as thoroughly. It features six brushing modes (one more than the Philips, but who’s counting): Daily Clean, Deep Clean, Whitening, Massage, Sensitive and Tongue Cleaning. You don’t really have to ‘brush’ your teeth; just place the brush against the teeth, and move it periodically. The screen features a timer directing you where to clean and when, and a big smiley face winking at you once you’ve brushed long enough. Which is fun.

Not unlike the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean and its sensors, the Oral-B’s pressure-sensor technology will alert you when brushing too hard as well, automatically slowing down the brush head pulsation and oscillation speeds. According to claims, the brush removes 300% more plaque along the gum line than a regular manual brush. The toothbrush heads are round and a bit smaller than competition, which might make reaching hard-to-reach areas of the mouth easier.

Pros:

  • Bluetooth-app features
  • Rotating head for more efficiency
  • Small brush head for better reach

Cons:

  • Technology overkill
  • High price tag

FOREO ISSA 2 – Get ready for some silicone love

FOREO’s ISSA 2 by features a brush head like no other: nylon, PBT polymer bristles are combined with the ultra-soft silicone ones. In turn, this hybrid design is perfectly efficient; tough on plaque and gentle on gums. The way it works; soft silicone bristles are positioned along the gum line for the gentle massage effect, while the PBT polymer bristles clean the teeth with passion.

Silicone alone would make this toothbrush worth while. Many dentists will tell you that the softest bristles available are actually the best ones to use; hard bristles will only hurt your gums. Silicone is a gentle and non-abrasive material, preventing you from putting too much pressure on your teeth. This in turn prevents gum recession and overbrushing. Unlike the standard nylon bristles, silicone is easily maintained, nonporous and ultra-hygienic, meaning pretty much bacteria-resistant and great for oral care.

Because its brush heads last for at least six months or so, ISSA 2 is a fantastic investment, since you don’t need to spend too much on new brush heads. Plus, it is lightweight and portable, and can be conveniently charged anywhere via USB cable. Each 1-hour charge lasts up to 365 days of use (?!), with no bulky charging dock to clutter up your bathroom shelf, so you can take it anywhere you go.

Pros:

  • Amazing battery life
  • Gum-friendly
  • Great-to-touch silicone finish
  • Right amount of useful features

Cons:

  • Unconventional
  • Might feel a bit too unusual for some
  • Bit expensive

WHY ISSA 2 WON US OVER

First of all, all three electric toothbrushes are rather expensive. But bear in mind: it’s all those advanced features that make them costly, so think about what features you really need or will actually use. In this sense, ISSA 2 was the most no-nonsense toothbrush, which we appreciated. One brushing mode works just fine if you have 16 speeds to choose from.

FOREO is considered an industry disruptor for a reason: ISSA 2 is unlike any toothbrush we know and the silicone bristles are simply a great innovation. Plus, its battery life is beyond compare: a whole year on just one charge?! In comparison, Philips and Oral-B both offer just 1-3 weeks per charge.

All three brushes feature timers and claim to be extremely hygienic, with Philips adding in a UV sanitizer to make sure all the microorganisms stay out of your mouth. Unlike Philips, though, both ISSA 2 and Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries toothbrushes offer a tongue cleaning option, something to keep in mind.

All in all: if you want to go along with the popular and the app-based, go for the Philips Sonicare DiamondCare or Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries. Both are great. But if you and your teeth want some real excitement, we suggest you give FOREO ISSA 2 a chance and let it sweep you off your feet.
